National Service Scheme (NSS) IIT Kharagpur

[ Four videos giving details from the field, are available at the end of this post. ] About one year back, proposals were asked by Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) Office of IIT Kharagpur to improve the condition of the people in our neighbourhood villages. For each project, maximum Rs. 1 Lakh of support was assured. Pariapara Unit of NSS, IIT Kharagpur took one project to improve economic condition of the villagers by demonstrating before them some alternative means of livelihood. The assessment of the village showed that water is a scarcity but farmers there did not know anything other than paddy cultivation which requires relatively large amount of water. Many a household there were found to have cattle. Two pronged strategies were thought. After lots of discussion and persuasion, some came forward to try something other than paddy. This year we conducted many health camps across different units. Most of them targeted village school students who the NSS volunteers cater to. The largest one was held on 30-3-2013 at Pariapara village. The camp started at 8:30 AM and ended at 3:00 PM. A total of 229 villagers were served. IIT Kharagpur campus community donated unused but usable medicines. Wholesaler in district town Midnapore was approached to meet the rest of the requirement. We worked together with IEEE EMB Society members housed in SMST, IIT Kharagpur and our IIT hospital for this. The following is a visual walk-through, submitted as report by a student lead member, on how they organized the medical camp and its various segments.

[ Blood Donation Camp of 16th March, 2013 :  Registration Link  and necessary information in our  previous post . ] In this post, we present the activities taken up by Pariapara Village Unit (UNIT 5) of NSS, IIT Kharagpur. We present their journey through pictures. First, the survey of drinking water condition and issues faced by villagers: The student volunteers then interacted with School of Water Resources of IIT Kharagpur for solution of the problems observed by them. While that takes some time to take a concrete shape, water filter was provided to village primary school. Here are few pictures. Student volunteers continued to work with village school children in encouraging and helping them in study. They also cleaned the village school play ground.
