National Service Scheme (NSS) IIT Kharagpur

A free health check-up camp was organized by NSS Unit-8 at Balarampur on April 1, 2017 for the women and girl students of Balarampur to create awareness on the need for better health facilities for growing teenagers and promote healthy lifestyle in the long run regarding common ailments, nutrition and hygiene and sanitation .   Nearly 90 women were served by 5 doctors.   While checking girls of about 13 years of age, the doctors provided counselling about potential health and hygiene issues.   Students were prescribed appropriate medications for their health issues which included hematinic, antibiotics and anti-helminthic medications. Common issues related to the students identified at the camp were headache, vision problems, stomach-ache, worm infestation, anaemia, dsymenorrhoea and menorrhagia.   Unit 8 volunteers took care of everything; from brining in a number of medical personnel to acquiring the appropriate drugs and making sure the doctors were comforta...

Cleanliness ( swachhta ) of the localities and public facilities adopted by NSS - IIT Kharagpur has remained one of their key commitments over the past several years.  While all 15 units of NSS - IIT Kharagpur works on cleanliness, a few interesting initiatives related to cleanliness since the last monsoon are shared here.    Unit 10: Unit 13: Every Saturday, the Unit 13 clean up the litters from the Primary School ground and disposes of the garbage. An attempt by Unit 13 to install a garbage bin as to address the issue was not deemed workable by the locals, who figured the bin could be stolen.   The unit also cleans up garbage-clogged nullahs (gullies) of Kashijora.   An awareness drive was launched to request the locals not to dispose garbage in the nullahs.   Although recent survey of the same area shows reappearance of garbage in the nullah, garbage quantity is somewhat less than before.  Unit 8: A survey was...

Kashijora (Unit 13) Moorum roads in Kashijora, the village adopted by Unit 13 suffered damages due to heavy rains and indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste and consequent blocking of natural drainage.   Unit 13 volunteers repaired to the roads in mid September.   They also campaigned among the residents to convince them not to continue with their practice of indiscriminate garbage dumping, a root cause of the road damage. Balarampur (Unit 8) Unit 8 volunteers also undertook road repair at Balarampur on October 1, 2 and 22.   Their work was in the Arashini area of Balarampur.   NSS, IIT Kharagpur thanks Mrs Mita Sutradhar, the local Panchayat Member, and Mr Chandan Chakraborty, the Anchal Pradhan for arranging raw materials for the work and actively managing it.
