NSS, IIT Kharagpur conducts a drive every year to collect old but usable clothes that get replaced by new ones during festival time. These are distributed among needy in the neighbourhood villages( Link ). Yesterday, on the auspicious birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, we got an opportunity to collect thirty three old chairs and distribute them in eight village schools. We are thankful to Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) officials of the institute for supporting this. Earlier we had the opportunity to take the support of SRIC in providing muri (puffed rice)-making machine to self-help group of a tribal village and also taking up an agricultural project on crop diversification in another village ( Link ). In this post, we present a visual walk-through of how young NSS volunteers carried out the work starting from loading those chairs in the truck to distribution in the village schools. NSS faculty were there alongside. We had an opportunity to have a bri...

Annual Day

Image
NSS, IIT Kharagpur Annual Day was held on April 12, 2014 at V2 Auditorium of Vikramshila Complex. This is the time when we bid adieu to our 2nd year student volunteers who complete their 4-semester long service in this program. Emotions run high but that is how it is! Senior batch leaves, new batch joins. We continue to enrich ourselves by our association and humble offerings through this program; that helps us to exercise and assimilate certain important character qualities in us which often go unnoticed in a competitive world and that is for our own good and also for the good of our family, society, nation, humanity as a whole. People from villages / slums for whom we work, participate in this annual day function like every other NSS functions. In this, some of the volunteers are felicitated for their exemplary service and leadership role in the team. The annual day function was graced by Director, IIT Kharagpur. In his short speech he remembered his own NSS Days as student of thi...

The previous program officer of Porapara village unit has assumed greater responsibility to serve NSS, IIT Kharagpur as Program Coordinator. The new session saw continuation of the good work there with new program officers leading from the front. Here are few pictures of activities of the month by these two units. Teaching assis...

Image
Over the last month, Ayodhyagarh Village Unit (UNIT 2) arranged for and carried out the collection and distribution of books and cloth for the children of the village school. Responsibilities were divided between collecting the materials for distribution, calling the students from their homes, identifying them by class and finally issuing the books. Children from classes 1 to 4 were covered. The volunteers of Rakhalgeria Village Unit (UNIT 3) took it upon themselves to try and impart some education to the school students beyond their mere school curriculum. They are trying to expose the children more and more to the world around them, and the kind of opportunities available if they pursue their education. They also introduced them to the concept of a computer and showed them some interesting things on the laptop screen, something most children there were seeing for the first time. Paschimpathri Village unit (UNIT 4) took a wonderful initiative to organ...
