National Service Scheme (NSS) IIT Kharagpur

NSS Day is celebrated on 24th September each year. We had Mid-Semester Examination that time at IIT Kharagpur. The celebration was deferred to 5th November, 2011 after consultation with village schools and community members with whom NSS team interacts. We always try to involve community members in all our celebration and it is an educative experience to work with them. The State Level NSS Advisory Committee Meeting was held on 3rd November, 2011 at Conference Hall of Bikash Bhavan, Salt Lake, Kolkata. This was chaired by Honourable Higher Education Minister of the State, Mr. Bratya Basu. Mr. Satish Kumar Sawhney, Deputy Program Adviser, NSS came from Delhi. Vice Chancellors of various universities like Calcutta University, BESU, West Bengal State University, Sidhu Kanhu Birsa University etc. participated in the discussion. NSS, IIT Kharagpur was represented by the Program Coordinator. Dr. A. N. Dey, State Liaison Officer, West Bengal presented an overall picture of NSS activities in the state of West Bengal and issues to be addressed. Honourable Minister wished to see practical outcome from NSS engagement that goes beyond abstract philosophy. This followed a discussion on how to strengthen NSS activity in the state. NSS Day Function We are happy to announce the date of NSS Day function of this year as 05th Nov ., 2011 (deferred due to Mid. Sem. exam.).  The 3:00 hour long function at Kalidas Auditorium starts at 4:30 PM and will briefly present on-going NSS activities, award of scholarship to meritorious village / slum school children NSS, IIT Kharagpur serves (sponsored by senior students of the institute) and a cultural function jointly presented by NSS volunteers and the community they serve. Soladahar is the most underdeveloped village under Gopali Gram Panchayet in the neighbourhood of IIT kharagpur. The complaint from Panchayet was that the village is unorganized and thus no development work can be done there. For example, in last monsoon the Panchayet people were not allowed to conduct any survey in the village who wanted to assess the extent of damage. They were told either you help all or none. On hearing this, NSS, IIT Kharagpur started an effort to organize the village youth and generate confidence in themselves. The village club was revived. Sports materials were donated. Then the village youth took the responsibility of organizing a one day sports meet which was mentored and supported by NSS, IIT Kharagpur. The meet was held on 30.10.2011. As soon as the village schools opened after Durga Puja vacation NSS, IIT Kharagpur arranged to distribute the steel plates collected from S.N. / I.G. Hall. In between, the plates were repaired (wherever required) and SN / IG Hall and NSS names were embossed on the plates so that they do not find a way to market. Two of the most needy area in the neighbourhood were identified. The plates were given for use of Mid Day meal scheme of one SSK (Soladahar village) and one Primary School (Gholgharia village). S.N. / I.G. Hall warden and a few Hall Council Members accompanied the NSS, IIT Kharagpur team and participated in the distribution. Member of final year students were also there who are providing PRERANA scholarships to meritorious village / slum school children and had a field survey. Regular Activities The regular activities of NSS, IIT Kharagpur are going on full swing. Work of some of the units have earned so much attention that the community where we could not reach out as yet are putting up requests .... so that our volunteers reach there. Headmaster of one high school affectionately complained yesterday that his school is getting less attention from us compared to another high school in the neighbourhood. We assured him the service of more volunteers. Free coaching centre for underprivileged in a nearby village has become so popular that a section of privileged community from the town requested their wards to be accommodated in that village centre. The other unit's weekly cleaning activity drew the locals to lend hand. Several units have engaged themselves with the village community to come up with cultural performances for NSS Day celebration (due to mid-sem. exam., it is going to be deferred.).
