NSS Camp 2011 ends
Today (5th of December) submission from all groups related to the camp will get completed. We present at bottom of this post, some of the videos individual groups have prepared depicting their journey.
One program officer in his feedback aptly summarized this journey, "We see leaders in the making." The most inspirational of the student leaders in his final speech talked about four principles from Mother Teresa. He said, "There is only one religion - religion of love. There is only one language - language of heart. There is only one caste - caste of humanity. There is only one way - way to service."
We had research students of IIT Kharagpur, spouses of IIT faculty members visiting camp site and helping NSS officials. Everyday we had a responsibility of NSS Camp diary checking of all the campers during 9:00-12:00 hrs. when campers were busy with physical work. We had NSS faculty in tears while going through inspirational anecdotes written by campers in camp diary. In final assembly of the day, the campers narrated such anecdotes on several occasions. The help of larger IIT Kharagpur community was immense. They donated used clothes to NSS volunteers in huge number. This served needy, 264 adults and 277 children in the adjoining area of camp site.
Local youth, school teachers, community leaders including elected panchayet member and panchayet head helped in a big way. They interacted with the campers on several occasions at camp site and at the place of physical work. We are grateful to all who helped to make the camp successful and give the young IITians a world of experience. As Dean, UGS, IIT Kharagpur said student group leaders at camp site during an interactive session, "The formal education that you get within campus wall is necessary but not sufficient. Exposure like this makes you complete."
All student volunteers acknowledged that they emerged as better human beings at the end of the camp and learnt team work, leadership qualities, sportsman spirit and many other character qualities. Above all, they developed a strong commitment to serve the nation. The camp attracted non-NSS NSO students who wanted to join the camp on certain days to get a taste of it and we happily agreed to that. In student feedback, the campers urged many more such camps in succeeding years to benefit a larger section of IITians.
There was one student volunteer who was the best among the roti makers and served kitchen everyday. Even after 3 hour of physical task of road making he used to join the kitchen team and start making roti for fellow NSS volunteers who just returned from laborious physical work of road laying. During feedback session he talked about his motivation, "I used think that I am serving those who are serving the nation."
There were two physically challenged students in the camp. They ignored the option of doing light office work at camp site, offered to them by camp officials, and participated in all activities including physical work like road-building (they had to walk more than a KM everyday to reach the work site, carry heavy building material with fellow student volunteers), walked in the awareness rally etc. with full enthusiasm.
Salute to this spirit of young India! Let us all imbibe in us this spirit of team work, sacrifice and service and make our nation proud.
