National Youth Week

NSS volunteers of IIT Kharagpur participated in the guest lecture on life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda arranged on the eve of National Youth Week. A report on this by NSS volunteers appear here (Link). On 14th January, 2012 a colourful procession was brought out by NSS team which covered more than 5 KM around the campus. It inspired the NSS team to have senior faculty members walking with the NSS team in this rally. Slogans like 'Bharat Mata Ki - Jai', 'Swami Vivekananda - Amar Rahe', 'Netaji Subhas - Amar Rahe', 'Mahatma Gandhi - Amar Rahe', 'Rani Laxmibai - Amar Rahe' .... filled the air.

That day, one unit of NSS, IIT Kharagpur deputed to the tribal hamlet of village Kuchalachati worked together with the villagers and also sponsored restoration work of three village wells. The local panchayet members and other community leaders were present there and praised young NSS volunteers profusely. NSS team there have identified one very poor family for whom a asbestos roof model house is to be made. We are happy to say that all these are being possible for the support and inspiration we get from larger IIT Kharagpur community.

On 16th January, 2012, another unit of NSS, IIT Kharagpur carried out cloth distribution in another tribal village, Soladahar (poorest in the neighbourhood, of tribe Lodha). A total of 46 families that includes 140 children and 75 adults benefited from this. One special aspect of this cloth distribution was the larger involvement of local youth. They took the responsibility of preparing the list of beneficiary by visiting every house and the distribution was done smoothly and in a very disciplined manner.

On 12th January, 2012 NSS Program Coordinator was invited in a local degree college (general discipline)  as a guest speaker. He apprised the young audience the activities of NSS, IIT Kharagpur and the way to develop one's character as prescribed by Swami Vivekananda. This week coincided with the biggest book fair of the town. Help was extended to  organizing members of local community to prepare an exhibition on Swami Vivekananda in the book fair.
