Thalassemia Awareness Workshop at Hiradihi-Kesiasole Madhyamik Siksha Kendra

Volunteers of Unit 11 of NSS IIT Kharagpur organized a workshop at Hiradihi-Kesiasole Madhyamik Shiksha Kendra (MSK) on March 5, 2016 in collaboration with Thalassemia Muktir Angikar, an NGO based in Madinipur to spread awareness on Thalassemia among the MSK students.  Dr Amalkanti Pande, Mr Gopal Sinha, Mr Bubai Das and Mr Maniklal Saha, of Thalassemia Muktir Angikar made a cogent presentation on the genetic underpinning of the disease and emphasized upon the importance of premarital blood testing in preventing thalassemia from developing in the subsequent generations.  Approximately sixty students of Hiradihi-Kesiasole MSK attended the program along with their teachers. A quiz was also organized for participating MSK students and successful respondents were awarded with token prizes.   In the news:  

Drinking water quality at Ayodhyagarh, Gaighata and Porapara

NSS has been monitoring drinking water quality at several villages over the past several months.  These villages rely on groundwater for their drinking water needs.  Water samples from four tube wells serving two schools and the tribal community of Porapara village and two shallow water wells also serving Porapara were found to be too acidic to be fit for human consumption.  Their iron concentration and bacterial load also exceeded the limits set by WHO for potability by large margins.  Iron overdose can damage internal organs such as brain and liver particularly affecting young children and bacterial loads in drinking water exposes users numerous water borne diseases and chronic malnutrition.  Although only a few villages were monitored in this assessment, experience indicates that situation in other villages adopted by NSS would also not be very different.  School going children and their families (in fact, the entire village in many case...

💧NSS Annual Blood Donation Camp, 2016💧

NSS IIT Kharagpur organized their Annual Blood Donation Camp on 13th March, 2016 at Technology Students Gymkhana.  Kharagpur Voluntary Blood Donors Organization(KVBDO) helped organize this event at which the blood bank of Bankura Sammilani Medical College Hospital collected 163 units of blood.  NSS IIT Kharagpur wants to put on the record their appreciation of the overwhelming support of the students, research scholars, staff and faculty members of the institute as well as several well wishers from areas nearby, who donated blood and made the event successful.  The support received from Technology Students Gymkhana, BC Roy Technology Hospital and the Continuing Education Program is also very much appreciated.     The donors are requested to pick up their certificates and cards from Foundation Engineering laboratory of Department of Civil Engineering between 9:30a and 5:30p, Monday to Friday or by setting up an appointment by calling 09647182769 or 0977...
