Today is a big day for the nation. NSS, IIT Kharagpur wishes all a very, very happy Independence Day. In unfurling the national flag, Prof. N. R. Mandal, Dean, Student Affairs and Acting Director made us aware of our inner core that always seeks freedom but out of ignorance takes different paths - one leads to deeper bondage and greater agony, the other leads to enlightenment and blissful experience. My colleagues, students of IIT Kharagpur, students of our neighbouring schools, ladies and gentlemen, a very good morning to you all.    It is indeed a great pleasure to see you all present here, celebrating the 68th Independence Day of our Motherland. Avik Mahto, a class V student from Porapara village passed away on February 8, 2014 at an early age of 10 years.   He was suffering from bone marrow complications.   The problem was detected only in late 2013 and by that time the disease had reached an advanced stage. Since 2010, he was a regular participant of the weekend classes run by NSS, IIT Kharagpur Unit 4 volunteers at Porapara. We deeply mourn the loss of Avik and pray that his soul rests in peace. Volunteers of Unit 4 have come forward with a total contribution of Rs. 12,500.00 from themselves for instituting an annual prize of Rs1000.00 in Avik’s memory. The orientation of first year students was held today at V2 auditorium of IIT Kharagpur. About 500 new students joined the program this year. NSS Program Coordinator using power-point slides explained the aim and scope of NSS activities, in reference to work carried out by 15 different units in 18 villages and slums. Since in IIT Kharagpur this is treated as curricular program, the orientation also dwelt on how evaluation is done, how grade is arrived at and the consequence of poor grades. In the Q & A session, all queries of students like annual camp, dress code, conveyance, leave rule were addressed. At the end of this one hour orientation that started at 9 AM, the freshers interacted with unit faculty / senior students of respective units and proceeded to respective villages. NSS, IIT Kharagpur Annual Day was held on April 12, 2014 at V2 Auditorium of Vikramshila Complex. This is the time when we bid adieu to our 2nd year student volunteers who complete their 4-semester long service in this program. Emotions run high but that is how it is! Senior batch leaves, new batch joins. We continue to enrich ourselves by our association and humble offerings through this program; that helps us to exercise and assimilate certain important character qualities in us which often go unnoticed in a competitive world and that is for our own good and also for the good of our family, society, nation, humanity as a whole. People from villages / slums for whom we work, participate in this annual day function like every other NSS functions.
