Advisory Committee Meeting

The vacation is almost over. The activities will go full stream in a few weeks. We are eager to welcome new batch of NSS volunteers. At IIT Kharagpur, NSS is not mandatory after 2nd year. We wish a hearty farewell to this batch. However, we welcome their participation in NSS activities in remaining years too and they will be treated as NSS volunteers only. This will help in maintaining continuity and guiding new batches.

Though it was vacation time, we were happy to have student volunteers in the Advisory Committee Meeting held at Board Room of IIT Kharagpur on 7th July, 2011 and was chaired by our Director. Amongst other dignitaries S.D.O., Kharagpur and Program Adviser from Regional Head Quarter of NSS at Kolkata were present. It appears that there is a convergence on working on a model village from NSS, IIT Kharagpur; representative of Nehru Yuva Kendra, Mdnapore; District Admin.; other NGOs. One tribal village was identified which is one of the most backward and where NSS team had already made their presence felt by a few welfare initiatives collaborating with village population. There are many other suggestions. Let us try our best and together we can surely make a difference!

Finally, the observation of a student volunteer present in the meeting is pasted below.

At first, I would like to extend my heartily thanks to NSS management for including students' representatives in the NSS advisory committee meeting. What I observed is if, we really work hard then we are not short of appreciation, there are people in management who are ready to support our activities and are determined to make a honest change. And as a student volunteer I must say, these accolades are immensely welcome in boosting our motivation level in addition to satisfaction which we get from working in field.
For benefits of students volunteer, so that they can work without any obstacles many steps have been discussed for implementation. These are as follows,
1. While communicating with villagers we face problem with language, for this we will get support from 2 members from youth clubs in respective village.
2. Sometimes we face issues like families not co-operating with us in terms of providing relevant information regarding their economic condition etc because they feel nothing concrete is done even after surveying. For this we have been given assurance that steps will be taken with the help of local administration to help them in the manner so that the trust of NSS volunteers in people are not broken.
3. We will have opportunities for participation in various adventure and life style development activities conducted by Ministry of   Sports and Youth Affairs.
4. With our help there will be proper analysis of surveys done and action plan for working on those will be prepared on regular basis and efforts will be made to ensure with help of local administration so that we don't feel that our efforts are being wasted.
5. And lastly, I must say without any hesitation that our program officers and every person involved in NSS management are really working very hard and it's really a high time when all of us should break our shells and contribute as much as we can to build a name for NSS, IIT Kharagpur not only in eyes of government officials and different places but more importantly in hearts of people and extract as much as we can from this golden opportunity provided for us.
With Regards,
Pushpam Bhardwaj
