NSS Day Celebration: Part I

This year's NSS Day celebration was held on 05th Oct., 2013, deferred from 24th Sept. due to mid-semester examination.We divided the function in two halves. In the first half (2:00-4:30 PM), our student volunteers gathered tribal people from two of our neighboring villages for whom backward caste certificates were made ready by BDO office. Fifty of them were given certificate in the V2 auditorium of Vikramshila
Complex, IIT Khaargpur. These tribal people participated in two caste certificate camps organized by our volunteers last year in Soladahar and Rangametia villages (Link1, Link2). Out of 192 applicants, certificates for 153 are ready now. Rest require furnishing or some correction in the application documents. BDO and Jt. BDO who were present in the occasion assured quick action on the rest. We had panchayet members of these two villages present. On their request, BDO assured more such camps with the support of NSS, IIT Kharagpur from January, 2014 to reach out to the rest of the tribal populations in our neighbourhood.

This phase of the program started with address by Prof. P. P. Chakrabarti, Director, IIT Kharagpur. He asked the villagers to be aware of benefits these caste certificates would bring to them. This was followed by
speech of Prof. U. B. Deshai, Director, IIT Hyderabad who reminded volunteers importance of NSS program. Ms. Amita Sharma, Additional Secretary, Technical Education, MHRD gave important input on inclusive growth. The dignitaries distributed first 10 caste certificates. After that the BDO office staffs took over. The NSS team were overjoyed that one important project undertaken by them came a full cycle today and in a befitting manner.
