Self-Employment Training at Porapara Village

We held several discussions with key members of Social Engineering and Advanced Technological Education (SENATE) on how to impart self-employment training to the needy in our neighbourhood villages. SENATE has conducted various such training in the past (Link).

The bonding grew stronger when SENATE team attended our Annual Day function held on April 14, 2015 (Link), interacted with villagers who attended the function and had a look at range of our activities. Also, their work featured in our Newsletter, Annual Day 2015 issue (Link).

Come endsem. examination, summer break after this Annual Day event. May-June are the months when our young student volunteers are not here due to summer break. But we had enthusiastic NSS faculty coming forward to arrange a 20 day long training with SENATE's help. It was on tailoring where Unit 4 works. The village was Porapara, about 7 KM from IIT Kharagpur campus.

A total of 35 village women attended the training spread over the months May-June, 2015. In this post, we are happy to share with our readers few visuals on how the training started, how class used to be conducted (short video), and what the students finally could prepare after that 20 days training. These were women's wear. We have a plan to organize a training on men's wear in this semester.

We would like to add that we arranged donation of two new sewing machines to this village women from the support received from our alumni cell (Link). We got repaired three other sewing machines that were available to them before this training started.
