National Service Scheme (NSS) IIT Kharagpur

NSS organized their Annual Blood Donation Camp of at the Old Badminton Court of Technology Students Gymkhana on March 18 , 2017 in partnership with Kharagpur Voluntary Blood Donors Organization.   In the event 149 units of blood were collected by the Blood Bank of Bankura Sammilani Medical College Hospital .   The event would not have been possible without active help and participation of Technology Students Gymkhana – Professor Somesh Kumar, President, TSG and Mr Mandal and Sudheer, Sports Officers, TSG, in particular – and the Continuing Education Program of IIT Kharagpur.   Thanks are also due to the donors for their support in making the event a success. We planned a blood donation camp, that has now become an annual event, on 21-03-2015. We discussed it with Kharagpur Voluntary Blood Donors' Organization (KVBDO) long back. The idea was to have staggered blood donation so that there is never an excess, neither the blood banks around us allowed to go dry. Team from Midnapore Blood Bank came. Venue selected was Transit Hostel, opposite to our B C Roy Technology Hospital. Needless to say that we got due cooperation from our own hospital. The campaign started with emailing, putting up banner etc. The blood bank requirement was of 75 units. And we had no choice to stop registration on this count after 80, but took care not to dishearten all those who were there in queue. There were UG students, PG students, faculty members, husband-wife coming together for donation. Truly, it looked like a festival, a festival where we celebrated joy of giving. Here are glimpses of the Blood Donation Day. The camp started at 10:15 AM and continued up to 1:30 PM. There were many who donated blood for the first time in their life in this camp. We could capture proud moments of few of them. The doctors and staffs of B C Roy Hospital, IIT Kharagpur helped the Blood Bank team from Sub Division Hospital all possible way. The doctors were very strict on having all qualifying medical parameters met. Thus about ten were unfortunately turned back, that included a senior faculty who arrived before others and had sequence no. 1. On the positive side, we had students who could not qualify last year but was in all smile to be able to become a proud donor this time. We also had mother donating blood with small kid patiently waiting outside. The camp was also a meeting place of old timers. This coincided with 'Save Earth Day'. We were inspired to have Director, IIT Kharagpur inaugurating the function and launching 'Save Energy' and 'Save Water' campaign of student volunteers of NSS, IIT Kharagpur. Dean, UGS encouraged all NSS volunteers and welcomed them to use every opportunity to serve the underprivileged. The student leaders from different units presented their year long activities. A cultural program followed in which our student volunteers and villagers participated. Certificate of recognition was issued to outstanding NSS volunteers completing their tenure and a trophy was handed over to best NSS Camp team by the student leader of the second best team.
