Regular Activities The regular activities of NSS, IIT Kharagpur are going on full swing. Work of some of the units have earned so much attention that the community where we could not reach out as yet are putting up requests .... so that our volunteers reach there. Headmaster of one high school affectionately complained yesterday that his school is getting less attention from us compared to another high school in the neighbourhood. We assured him the service of more volunteers. Free coaching centre for underprivileged in a nearby village has become so popular that a section of privileged community from the town requested their wards to be accommodated in that village centre. The other unit's weekly cleaning activity drew the locals to lend hand. Several units have engaged themselves with the village community to come up with cultural performances for NSS Day celebration (due to mid-sem. exam., it is going to be deferred.). There the IIT student volunteers and villagers will enact p...

National Service Scheme (NSS), IIT Kharagpur team is honoured to find its place in the Diamond Jubilee Curtain Raiser program that preceded the convocation function. The program was attended by many past Directors, Deputy Directors, Chairman of the Board of Governors, current Director, Deputy Director, faculty members, students, campus community and children. It was held in Tata Steel sports complex with a backdrop huge calender depicting birthday of all graduating students. The team from Kolkata, led by noted film director Mr. Biplab Dashgupta, spent one full morning with NSS volunteers in a village where that unit works. On the way they covered one 'save environment' campaign at campus market. It was difficult for the video team to visit all the villages where NSS, IIT Kharagpur works. Therefore, one village named Pariapara was selected. Like previous Saturday, this Saturday too the program officer arranged various events, competitions and arranged lunch (on Saturday mid-d...

Cloth Collection for Children, Independence Day Celebration

Image
One unit of NSS, working in a very backward village in our neighborhood, is overwhelmed by the situation on ground there. The group within the unit who are supposed to work with villlge kids has placed a request. They find it difficult to engage with children who do not have anything worthwhile to wear. NSS, IIT Kharagpur will launch its mass cloth collection drive for distribution among the needy as soon as the rainy season is over. We have a problem of storage and distribution in rainy season. The current campaign is a focused drive to collect used, wearable clothes from campus community for children in the age group of 4-10 years. If you have anything to contribute, please fill-up this form. The student volunteers of the specific unit will try to collect the clothes from your residence at a time of your choice. For any clarification, please contact Prof. Srabani Taraphder, Program Officer of the specific unit or Prof. Goutam Saha, Program Coordinator, NSS, IIT Kharagp...

Advisory Committee Meeting

Image
The vacation is almost over. The activities will go full stream in a few weeks. We are eager to welcome new batch of NSS volunteers. At IIT Kharagpur, NSS is not mandatory after 2nd year. We wish a hearty farewell to this batch. However, we welcome their participation in NSS activities in remaining years too and they will be treated as NSS volunteers only. This will help in maintaining continuity and guiding new batches. Though it was vacation time, we were happy to have student volunteers in the Advisory Committee Meeting held at Board Room of IIT Kharagpur on 7th July, 2011 and was chaired by our Director. Amongst other dignitaries S.D.O., Kharagpur and Program Adviser from Regional Head Quarter of NSS at Kolkata were present. It appears that there is a convergence on working on a model village from NSS, IIT Kharagpur; representative of Nehru Yuva Kendra, Mdnapore; District Admin.; other NGOs. One tribal village was identified which is one of the most backward and where NSS team had...

Blood Donation Camp : On 1st May at Staff Club

Image
We are happy to learn that a Blood Donation Camp is arranged on 1st May, 2011 at Staff Club, IIT Kharagpur (Opposite to Tech. Market, SBI ATM side). The same team of doctors and staffs from nearby Blood Bank of Sub-Divisional Hospital, Kharagpur will be visiting. The camp starts at 8:00 AM and will continue up to 2:30 PM. This is arranged by our beloved staff members of IIT Kharagpur. We are humbled by their gracious gesture to seek 'active support' of NSS, IIT Kharagpur. It is widely circulated in press and other media that most of the blood banks are currently running dry. In the 3rd April, 2011 blood donation camp, we found that many of the blood donors were made to return as the limit of the number of units that can be preserved in the blood bank was reached. Here is another opportunity to come forward to this noble cause and participate in this voluntary blood donation camp . All are requested to spread the message. For Frequently Asked Questions and / or 'Dos ...

Blood Donation Camp

The mood was festive. India winning ICC One Day Cricket World Cup was an added factor. At times the queue were 25 persons long. People waited patiently for their turn. Being rejected due to low BP made many befriend glucose water, banana, cake, biscuit to savage the situation, if possible. None was ready to give up. We started at 10 AM. Even at 2:30 PM many were waiting. They had to leave reluctantly as the blood bank people gave up! They had reached their capacity. The count was 106 at that time, 6 more than what they were prepared. We had informal chats with donors when they were resting after donation. One M.Tech. student proposed to make it an half-yearly event. Later, the blood bank doctor congratulated us on selection of this month. In April, they do have a scarcity. They requested us to arrange one in every April. All the blood bank staffs, specially Dr. Jhuma Mukhopadhyaya of Sub Division Hospital made the entire exercise look easy. Dr. Seema Roy of BC Roy Tech. Hospital ex...
