NSS Day Celebration

Due to Mid. Sem. examination the NSS Day celebration was rescheduled on Oct. 13, 2012. Here is a glimpse of the event.

In the first segment (2:00 - 4:00 PM), we had inter NSS unit Nukkad (street corner play) on social awareness theme. We are thankful to Student Drama Society (HTDS, BTDS) members of Gymkhana for judging the performances.

The performances were appreciated by all. The winner, UNIT 3 scored 244 out of total possible 300 while UNIT 15 came close second with a score of 240. Such was the keenness of all participants. The units that followed this order are UNIT 13, 7, 5, 14, 6, 8, 10, 2, 11, 12, 4, 1.

We had a short break from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM. The guests from village started arriving by 4 P.M. And it started to drizzle. We were worried. But all the villages where NSS units work not only attended the function, but also made it a point to share the stage with various performances. About 350 villagers from 15 villages participated in this evening function.

After the welcome address of the NSS, IIT Kharagpur Program coordinator, the evening function was formally inaugurated by Prof. Amit Patra, Dean, Alumni Affairs & International Relations, IIT Kharagpur who was also Acting Director. We also had Headmaster of local High School, representative from NSS Program Officers, representative from NSS student volunteers joining Prof. Patra in lighting the auspicious lamp. Soon Ms. R. Vimla, I.A.S., SDO, Kharagpur joined us.

We had release of NSS Newsletter (this can be read or downloaded from here : Link), presentation by student leaders of 15 units depicting on-going activities, PRERANA scholarship 2013 (sponsored by senior IIT Kharagpur students covering 15 primary and 3 high schools from adjoining villages / slums), donation of sewing machines to women self help group of three villages (two machines to one village; sponsored from Institute Alumni fund) and last but not the least, a wonderful expression of joy through cultural program presented by village community from 15 villages / slums.

There was an exhibition of handicraft materials prepared by students of one village high school.

The function ended with a vote of thanks by the convener of the function, Program Officer of UNIT 15. This UNIT took lead in hosting of this event ably supported by other units.
