Annual Day- 16 Apr, 2016
NSS celebrated their Annual Day on April 16, 2016. As in previous years scholarships, prizes, certificates and medals were given away to students from schools adopted by NSS IIT Kharagpur. Forty-nine students received the Prerana Scholarship this year, six received the Chandrasekhar Yadala Memorial Annual Prize, three received the Aditya Memorial Scholarship and one received the Avik Memorial Annual Prize. Regular visitors to this blog may be aware that the Prerana Scholarships are largely paid for by old NSS boys and girls and a few faculty members of IIT Kharagpur. Chandrasekhar Yadala Memorial Annual Prize is paid for by Prof Jacob Chacko of Mat Sci and his students in the memory of Late Chandrasekhar Yadala who used to be a student of this group. Aditya Memorial Scholarship has been instituted by Mr Surajit Bhattacharya, an erstwhile resident of Kharagpur, now employed in the IT industry for students of Benapur High School. Late Avik Mahato used to be a student of the teaching programme at Porapara of Unit 4 of NSS IIT Kharagpur. Volunteers of Unit 4 gave an endowment in Avik’s memory to Gopali Ashram School, where he used to study in class VI when he passed away. The annual prize is awarded to the best student of class VI of Gopali Ashram School. The scholarships and prizes were given away by Prof PP Chakrabarti, Director IIT Kharagpur and Dr SA Najmi, Additional Chief Medical Superintendent, SE Railway, Kharagpur. Citations were handed over to 34 second-year students of IIT Kharagpur for their exemplary contributions to NSS activities. Medals were given away as well to the first-year members of Units 13, 3 and 12 for their excellent performance during the last annual camp of NSS. These three units were adjudged to be the best, the second and the third best units respectively. The function was wrapped up with several cultural programmes by students from the high schools of Ayma, Talbagicha and Pariapara and Madhyamik Shiksha Kendra of Hiradihi-Kesiashol.
