Medical Camp by Unit 11

Unit 11 of NSS, IIT Kharagpur conducted a medical camp at Talbagicha High School on 23-08-2014. This school caters to mostly the underprivileged community where both parents need to earn to maintain their livelihood and as daily wage earners. The school is not only the source of inspiration for the school children but also an important part of their support system to look for a brighter tomorrow. NSS team is engaged with this school for long. The 'Vivekdisha' program (Link) is run successfully with the help of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University and this was facilitated by NSS. The student volunteers every week engages with the school children and time to time comes up with special activities like this medical camp.

The general check up section was supported by doctors of School of Medical Science & Technology and B. C. Roy Hospital of IIT Kharagpur and the eye check section was supported by Prembazar Eye Hospital at the outskirt of IIT Kharagpur. The Thalassemia counseling centre was supported by Saptarshi Vivekananda Society, Midnapore. With their help NSS team conducted a Thalassemia detection camp in this school on March 01, 2014 (Link). The few students who were detected as carrier were called along with their guardian and they were explained that they have nothing to worry, except that if marriage proposal comes they should get proposed partner's thalassemia detection done and not go ahead if both are found to be carrier.

A total of 180 school students were served in this medical camp. Next, we present a visual walk-through of the camp, its various segments. The adjoining video is a quick run through of the same.

The following is for the future: Unit 2 Program Officer and selected student volunteers came to see how Unit 11 is organizing this camp so that they can hold one in their adopted village.
