From UNIT 6 Diary

NSS IIT Kharagpur, UNIT 6 works in the village named Gholgharia, about 4 KM from IIT Kharagpur campus. We first present some pictures that gives an overview of the activities from 08-08-2015 to 05-09-2015 and then the weekly report. The activities centered around plantation, cleaning, teaching and survey. The survey statistics presented below in the form of plots is interesting.

08-08-2015

Plantation
The plantation team watered the plants and worked cooperatively despite the heat. All the NSS volunteers were fully energized. They were given the task to sow the saplings and water the plants which were planted already. School staff were pleased to see their hard work

Cleaning

The cleaning team started their work of cleaning the classrooms. The team members began with the class room beside the assembly place followed by the other one and then the store house.

It was a tiresome task for them because the classes were somewhat dirty but they worked together as a team and with the help of seniors, it was completed successfully.

Painting

All the members of the painting team were present at the school.But on the first day due to lack of materials like paints-brushes painting work was not started then the painting team were told to join the plantation and the cleaning team. They enthusiastically helped in these tasks. Further, the quantity of paints and their procurement will be decided by the painting team seniors and the group leader soon. Painting work is expected to commence soon.

Teaching

The teaching team plays an important role as the main purpose is primary education of the students.This team was composed of mainly of Bengali volunteers so that they can properly interact with the students and understand their mind set and help the students understand different topics clearly.The teaching team also had a meeting after the first day of NSS and have decided upon the topics that will be taught and it’s distribution among themselves.

Plantation

The plantation team started their work as soon as they got the buckets from school. They continued the work of watering the plants as well as planted some saplings.

Cleaning

The cleaning team started their work of cleaning the classrooms as usual. The team members began with the storage room then followed by the 2 classroom.

Surveying

The surveying team started their work right after arriving to the school. They split up into groups of five people each and then reached in different areas of the village accordingly. The information regarding the Bank Account and Poverty line status was recorded. Data of approximately 25 households was collected.

Teaching

The team members who were assigned Saturday for teaching arrived at 10 a.m. They initially waited till the students arrived and then they started the teaching work.

Plantation

Today’s task was to clean the unwanted grass. The plantation team watered the plants and worked cooperatively despite the heat. All the NSS volunteers were fully energized . The saplings were planted already. School staff were pleased to see their hard work.

The cleaning team started their work of cleaning the classrooms. The team members began with the class room after the assembly place followed by the other classroom and then the store house. They worked together as a team and with the help of seniors, it was completed successfully.

Some sugessions – At Golgharia School, water from hand pump is not drinkable and may have bad effect on health of children, so the core team can plan to do something in this field.

Surveying Team- This team  collects data from each and every house (including kaccha and pakka) of Gholgharia  and gives the benefit of various government schemes.

Anganwadi- This team consists of the girls. All the volunteers reached Anganwadi at the scheduled time and commenced their respective jobs of interacting with the kids.

05-09-2015

Plantation

The Plants have now grown up. The Plantation team watered the plants as usual. They found that weeds were growing around the plants so they did weeding as well. 

Cleaning

The team members had cleaned the classroom as usual. They started by cleaning storage room followed by classroom. They cleaned the classroom nicely by removing dust from showcases where books were kept.  

Painting

The painting team helped the plantation team as well as the surveying team in their work as there was no paint available.

Survey

The survey team members did their job quite nicely. They were divided in two groups and had almost completed the survey of whole the village. Their data shows that almost all the people were not aware of Atal Pension Yojna. Almost all of them were connected with banks. They all have Ration cards except a few.

Anganwadi

The Anganwadi team did the teaching work. They taught them alphabets, Colour names and numerical as per children’s teaching session students had their breakfast.

Teaching

The teaching team members who were assigned duty of Saturday came at sharp 10 am. They taught the primary school students on this eve of teacher’s day. The teaching team first told them about teacher’s day then they started their as usual duty.
