In the second half of the 26th January, 2012 one unit of NSS, IIT Kharagpur and NSS Coordinator was invited in the Annual Sports function of a local High School situated in a slum area, serving mostly the underprivileged. A report, prepared by student group leader on the event, follows.
It's a grand event celebrated on the eve of REPUBLIC DAY to see hundred's of children playing. The Chattisgarh high school of AYMA conducted many exciting events for the student's conducting a two day sports meet. Children's of all age participated enthusiastically bringing out their inner talents and energy. The school on it's first day (25-01-2012) conducted events like kabaddi, kho-kho etc... for it's higher class children. Many athletic events like long jump, high jump, shot put etc.. are also conducted. The students are filled with joy and happiness to play with their friend's. It's a competition to win and at the same time enjoying the joy of playing. I asked my students how they felt in participating in sports like this. They replied “it’s a pleasure and privilege for us to play with our friends, we are enjoying a lot and the events are good and encouraging for us". All the winners are awarded with wonderful gifts to encourage them and keep the spirit at its high level. The students also developed an attitude of sportsmanship. To them winning and losing became a way of life. In one or other they may win or lose, as no one is perfect in all. They motivated their co-friends and supported them with their clapping, shouting and applauding. The events went till evening carrying the same amount of energy and power.
On it's second day the events are its best. Many new events joined to it. In the after noon the meet was accompanied by NSS co-ordinator Prof. Goutam saha, Prof. Pradeep singh, NCC major, principal, teachers and more dignitaries. They gave gifts and certificates to the student's. They loved to see hundreds playing with joy. They appreciated those who have done well and also the school management for conducting and encouraging programme of this kind. They hoped that their students do learn the art of decision making and ground realities embeded among the masses. They thanked the school for its continuous support to the NSS units.
As a whole the school stood as a platform for learning, sharing and building. We see students running to perform their best and more importantly small children of age 5 attracted many children and people. The Tiffin race conducted for small children caught many. They had to run, complete the tiffin and should then reach their final point. It’s a great pleasure to see small kids playing. The teachers also encouraged the losers by providing gifts also to them not to discourage them.
We fervently hope that many hidden talents in the sports among the masses will be brought to international level one day. Sports reveal the most important of mankind "CHARACTER". It’s builds qualities like sportsmanship, unity, mingling with others and more to learn to be happy. We hope to see many events like this in encouraging the children and keep them going on. It’s the children in the nation building. Republic day teaches us to propagate values of peace, justice, equality liberty among the masses and many. It leaves in front of us many challenges. We believe that we definitely strive in achieving a developed country.
